Young People are Rebels in Need of a Cause... Let's Make Sure it is the Right Cause

As young folk, didn't some of us feel like rebels without a cause? 

I am coming up 70. In my era, some of us chose to follow Greenpeace. Others chose anti Vietnam war. Still others embraced the feminist ideology and some the allure of socialism and communism. For myself, I never really embraced a cause. I was too busy enjoying life. But I was always a bit of a black sheep. 

Terribly stubborn. Opinionated and very determined in my views on what was black or white or right from wrong. Poor Redhead still tries to rein me in but alas, she hasn't been successful thus far. At 92, you would think she would give up trying, but she tells me " I am still your mother. " 

Bugger. She is right of course but in all fairness, I do attribute good parenting to the fact that she now has three geriatric offspring who tend to be a pain in her arse because we won't do as we are told. Let me explain.

Friends Indeed in Times of Need - the Eagle Squadrons

The Battle of Britain ended on 15th September, 1940 but the Blitz continued long after that.  Following the evacuation of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain a wealthy American living in London persuaded the government to form an RAF squadron composed entirely of Americans.

This is their story. 

When war broke out on 3rd September, 1939 there was no mad rush of support for the causes espoused by Britain or for Poland and other occupied European countries. Americans were very much of a mind to remain out of any European war. There was no universal feeling of kinship towards Britain and there was, in fact, quite a lot of sympathetic support for Hitler.

The second most common language spoken in the USA at the time was German and to cap it all the Neutrality Act prevented any engagement, let alone involvement, by Americans with any belligerent country. That included Britain and France as well as Germany.

Amongst all that however, there was a core of sympathetic support for Britain and an eagerness by those who had learned how to fly to enter the fray. Among the various means of getting around the rigours of the Neutrality Act was to cross the border into Canada and proceed from there.

Are We in Danger of Becoming Inventory to be Tracked?

In 1984, Sir Alec Jeffreys, a British geneticist, made a groundbreaking discovery that would forever alter the fields of genetics, forensic science, and criminal justice. While conducting research at the University of Leicester, Jeffreys stumbled upon a method to identify individuals using their unique DNA sequences. This discovery, later termed "DNA fingerprinting," revolutionised the way forensic science approached criminal investigations and provided an unparalleled level of precision in identifying individuals.

I happened upon a very interesting documentary on this subject yesterday and was struck by how similar the DNA digital fingerprint is to a modern barcode. 

The vast amounts of data collected through barcodes are often centralised in corporate or governmental databases. This centralisation creates opportunities for misuse, whether through hacking, unauthorised sharing of personal data, or exploitation for profit.

As our countries are collapsing under the weight of wokeism, social and communist ideology, who else is looking for a leader to fight back? I know that I am. As has been the case in all times of humanity's struggle against oppression and totalitarianism, all it takes is one man, one voice, one leader.... and the troops will rally.

Let Us Return to Celebrating What We CAN Do - not what we CANNOT do

How often do we lament that we do not have visionaries and forward thinkers in business and government today? People who say " CAN DO " instead of " You CANNOT DO that. "  

I was all set to publish a piece for today when I chanced on a phrase about Margaret Thatcher being the " Iron Lady.": Well, of course, my mind went into its usual strange mode whereby it focuses on one word and ends up in an entirely different place than the place it had originally been heading. Instead of writing about the lack of political leadership around the world, I ended up writing about Iron Ore. 

And how an Australian and an American collaborated and changed the future of  Australia forever. But, in a strange way, I did end up where I intended to be. I just came via a different route. So enjoy my journey through the Pilbara, the shipyards of WWII in America and ending up at my destination: Great Minds and Determination are needed right now. It is time to get back to building wealth, not destroying it.

Is Justice Now Just a Word for Political Interference? Surely We still need a Robust Media and Social Media?

Yesterday, one of our community members spoke about a film he watched called " Black and White." I had recently watched it and it triggered mixed emotions in me. It was based on the case of Max Stuart. It remains one of Australia's most controversial legal battles, marking a turning point in discussions around Indigenous rights, the death penalty, and potential miscarriages of justice in the country.

Today, I wonder what the outcome would have been.  A case that never made it to the courts because of Cultural Differences?  A case never discussed in media because of Misinformation laws?  Never championed by the Christian Church because it might upset the Islamists?  Have we as societies become so precious about diversity that Justice is no longer part of our vocabulary because it is not inclusive enough? 

It was two men - Rupert Murdoch, the now enemy of the Left and Father Tom Dixon, a passionate Priest from the Catholic Church who saved this Aboriginal man from the noose. If "they " are to destroy the Church and hobble the media, who will come to the rescue when it is our turn?

Censorship and Surveillance - The growing Crisis of Free speech and Civil Liberties

A  perfect storm of crises has been building. It comes from still bubbling rage with governments for their single-minded obsession with Covid and the lasting damage caused by lockdowns, masks, and vaccine mandates, with the media for amplifying government fear porn and social media platforms for collusion with innovative techniques of censorship, to the cost of living pressures, Ukraine war, and the crimes, housing crisis, cultural decay, and social dislocations of mass immigration. A survey earlier this year in France, Germany, Italy, and Poland found that 60 percent of voters lack trust in political institutions.

People have come to hold politicians to be dishonest, incompetent, and lacking courage and integrity. Being unheard and vilified has broken public trust in the underpinning institutions of democracy. In the 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer, less than half the people in high-income developed countries trust their government, media, business, and NGOs.

Our Furry and Feathered Friends

Recently, the internet has gone crazy over the issue of pets being eaten by illegal immigrants in America. Our furry and feathered Friends are so much part of our lives. 

There is something so fundamentally wrong about this. It reminded me of an article Flysa wrote some time ago.... enjoy. Monty.

As one gets older, it is sad to reflect on the many much-loved pets who have gone before.

My mother used to say their faces would flash before her in a passing parade. It is now the same for me as I advance in age.

As I write this, my laptop display image is that of my ginger Burmese cat Bo, long since departed.

With Courage We can Overcome a Tempest

When I was a child, my teacher taught us the story of Grace Darling, a heroine of enormous courage. I wonder how many of us have heard her name today or know of her incredible act of heroism one dark and stormy night in 1838?  It matters not what country you call home when considering people like Grace Darling. It is a story for everyone, from every background and every country. 

For there are many heroes in history whose names have been forgotten and whose acts of bravery have been washed ashore on a beach and taken away by the waves of indifference. 

This is our salute to one person whose name and deed should never be forgotten and, in the words of Wordsworth  " "But courage, Father! let us out to sea,
A few may yet be saved."

The Stupidity of Democracy is leading to it's Failure

One can make superb capital from the democratic stupidity. The members of the XXXX grasped that right away and took enormous pleasure in it.”

Henry Lawson: The Life and Legacy of Australia's Voice of the People

Henry Lawson managed to capture the heartbeat of The Bush. And that heart is under attack. From our own government. 

In modern Australia, where most people live in cities, the vision of the bush or the Outback is part of our cultural heritage. Contemporary Australian literature, film, and art still draw on The Bush that Henry Lawson wrote about. Our National Identity is still tethered to the life west of The Great Divide. For the moment..... 

Yet too many folk living in the cities think of the romantic version as conveyed by Banjo Patterson when, in truth, Henry Lawson painted a much more accurate picture. Sadly, that portrayal is becoming more accurate again, over 100 years later. The feeling that the people have been ignored, abandoned and left to survive because no one in the cities has a clue what life is like for their rural cousins. Take away the land, cover it in wind turbines and solar panels and then tell us that they care about the Outback?
