Talking in Code ...to defend our Nations

Of late, I have been concerned about the introduction of " hate speech laws " and " misinformation laws. " 

It got me thinking about the magnificent Navajo Code Talkers from World War II. When speaking in code, messages were passed and battles were won so that, in the war against evil, truth and justice could prevail. 

During World War II, the United States military used a secret weapon that helped turn the tide of the war: Navajo Code Talkers.

These were Native American soldiers from the Navajo tribe who played a critical role in transmitting top-secret military communications in an unbreakable code.

The Code Talkers were crucial in the Pacific theatre, helping the allies defeat the Japanese and ultimately win the war.

Kashmir has long been a region of immense political, economic, and strategic significance. Its place in South Asian geopolitics stems from its location, natural resources, and historical disputes involving India, Pakistan, and China.

And isn't India coming up a lot in the news these days? 

Are we seeing something start to form today as tensions are at a flashpoint? Something that has been on the boil for decades?  What external forces will come into play? It is one of those hmmmm... moments in history.  

As 2024 draws to a close, there has been significant tension and military action between Afghanistan and Pakistan. 
 
And it got me thinking about Kashmir, located as it is in such a strategically important place.  But let's start with what we know so far...

Clash on the High Seas: The Battle of the River Plate

In the early days of World War II, the Atlantic roared with the echoes of a daring naval confrontation that would captivate the world: the Battle of the River Plate.

On 5th October 1939 Britain and France assembled a force of four aircraft carriers, three battleships and sixteen cruisers to hunt down the Graf Spee. Part of this force, known as Force G consisted of the British heavy cruisers Cumberland and Exeter, the British light cruiser Ajax and the New Zealand light cruiser Achilles. This force was to patrol the area off the River Plate which separates Argentina and Uruguay..

In December, 1939, off the coast of Uruguay, the Allies clashed with the formidable German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in a high-stakes engagement.

A Christmas Fairytale for all of us... or is it a Nightmare?

Some years ago, I was sitting at my dinner table with my family. It was just after Christmas. We were enjoying our normal Sunday Roast dinner.
Our Sunday nights were very special to us as a family and we enjoyed them whilst we embraced the joy of unity of companionship and love.
 
But, that Sunday night, there was a knock at the door. We were not expecting visitors and it seemed strange... was it someone bearing bad news? 
 
My daughter said " Dad, you answer it. "  
 
I left the table and walked to the hallway.
 
The snow was falling and the temperature had dropped significantly over the past few days. it seemed unimaginable that someone was out in such conditions.
Perhaps it was a motorist who had broken down?
 
The knock came again, and I opened the front door. In front of me was a man, looking cold and weak. He looked at me and said " Please help me. "

As the sun sets on the Australia and culture of my youth, I salute the memories and legacies of over 200 years since the arrival of Captain Arthur Phillip, of a People who are fast disappearing into a sea of tik tok, facebook, instagram, and leftist ideologies.

Our language, our music, and our culture are being swallowed up and devoured by a zealous group of misguided, ill-educated and brainwashed ignoramuses who should have attended the Flysa Institute of Patriotic Studies.

Their student debt would be non-existent, and their education would have been infinitely more informed and beneficial.
But today, I wish to consider The Flysa Institute of Linguistic Studies.

The Good Old Days... Childhood Memories

As a child, we spent our Christmas holidays at a remote coastal sheep farm in New Zealand. 

The car would be loaded up with camping gear and we would head off on the long drive to spend 2 weeks of fishing, mucking around in the shearing shed, hiking across the paddocks and exploring the rock pools at low tide.

Our Aunts and Uncles would already be there and our cousins would be smug that they had already scanned out the best places to build forts, swim and generally get into mischief.

The journey was always the same. The route to the farm took us over a long winding gravel road that circled its way from the coast to a peak and then would wind relentlessly down the other side to the small bay that was our destination. 

My brother suffered from terrible car sickness and I would invariably go out in sympathy. It got to the stage where Dad would pull over at the same spot each trip and my brother and I would get out of the car, throw up and then get back in and Dad would pull out and head off again. 

No one ever said anything. It was just part of the routine.

As the Xmas/New Year break approaches many people will have their eyes on the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race; a traditional event starting on Boxing Day.

One of the several unticked items on my bucket list is to sail in the Sydney to Hobart.

Back in the 1970’s and early 80’s I crewed on an ocean racer out of Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne.

The boat I was on was a Carter 30, an English design that could better be described as a Slow Boat to China rather than a racing thoroughbred.

A Christmas Thought about the power of Words

Samuel Pepys is probably one of the most famous diarists in history and his words are treasured throughout the English speaking world. 

A politician from the 1600's, he captured the spirit and soul of Britain in those days of an era we no longer recognise. Though, in some cases, perhaps we do, all rather too well.

I read Mr Pepys most excellent diary entries for Christmas Day and Boxing Day 1665. Back during the days of the Plague, 400 years ago. So much has changed, yet so little. 

It is something millions of people around the English-speaking world did or will do on Christmas day no doubt:
 
To feel a need to read diary extracts from a long gone diarist or two, though they probably do not see it as such. The Bible.

In what can only be described as a Christmas miracle, Donald Trump and Elon Musk have teamed up to steer us towards a future as bright as Rudolph's nose. With Trump's unyielding charisma and Musk's visionary innovations, this unlikely pair is not just leading the way through political and technological fog but also infusing our daily lives with a festive joy that rivals Santa's haul.

Together, they're proving that whether you're navigating the complexities of global politics or the vastness of space, a little bit of boldness, a splash of humour, and a lot of light can guide us all to a truly joyous life.

Which brings me to old mate Rudolph.The red-nosed reindeer.  And are we not in for a journey this Christmas?

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer's journey from obscurity to becoming a Christmas icon is a fascinating tale of literature and marketing.  Given that we here in Australia will likely never see a reindeer  It is not surprising that I had to do some research...

Building Futures: How Prefabricated Housing Can Tackle Today’s Housing Crisis

With homelessness reaching crisis levels in many parts of the world, prefabricated housing offers a quick and easy solution. Combining speed, cost efficiency, and sustainability, these modular homes could provide safe, durable shelter for thousands in need.

Just as prefabricated housing systems helped rebuild Darwin after Cyclone Tracy, this approach can address today’s housing shortages, offering not just roofs over heads but pathways to dignity and stability. Things sadly lacking too often today.

On Christmas Eve 1974, Darwin, the capital city of Australia’s Northern Territory, was forever changed by Cyclone Tracy, one of the most devastating natural disasters in Australian history.
The cyclone obliterated approximately 70% of Darwin’s buildings, killed 71 people, and left over 20,000 residents homeless.
In the aftermath, Darwin faced the enormous challenge of rebuilding a city nearly wiped off the map.

Bruce Ruxton - a true Australian Hero and Patriot

Bruce Ruxton was an unapologetic patriot and a steadfast advocate for Australian veterans, known for his unwavering commitment to the nation’s values and heritage.

As the long-serving President of the Victorian branch of the Returned and Services League (RSL), he became a household name, boldly championing the rights of ex-servicemen and women while fiercely opposing policies he believed undermined Australia's sovereignty and identity.

A decorated World War II veteran, Ruxton's straight-talking demeanour and passion for preserving Australia's ANZAC spirit often sparked controversy, yet his dedication earned him respect across political and social divides. 

Bruce Ruxton is one of my heroes. I never met the man and these notes are drawn from personal recollection of some of his better known controversial escapades with a bit of research added in. 

He passed on 23rd of December 2011.
