The Battle of Beersheba - A bold Charge that Changed the Tide of History

Beersheba is a name that should resonate with every Australian with the same ease and reverence as Gallipoli.

Sadly it does not.

Because the charge on the desert city of Beersheba on 31st October, 1917 is the most outstanding piece of military daring and execution ever undertaken in the military history of the World.

On that day 800 members of the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade of the Imperial Mounted Division brought a stunning victory from the jaws of defeat and started the dismembering of the Ottoman Empire.

The attack began in the late afternoon by this unique breed of men riding a unique breed of horse. It is widely described as the last great cavalry assault yet the participants were not cavalry; they were mounted infantry.

Virtually all political persuasions agree on the need for police. For libertarians, maintaining a criminal justice system, of which the police are a major component, is viewed as one of the few legitimate roles of government. 

The first modern and professional police force was the London Metropolitan Police Service, established in 1829. At the time there was substantial public opposition to a large and possibly armed police force, based on fears it could be used to suppress protest or support unpopular rule. The example of France, which had secret police at the time, was significant. 

The Met was established by Robert Peel, Britain’s Home Secretary, who set out to address these concerns via his nine principles of policing. These principles are now famous and remain the gold standard for police everywhere.

The strange thing is that my mind immediately went to that figure of historical notoriety, Lawrence of Arabia.

It is probably accepted that most kids today wouldn't have a clue who we was, but most of us from the era who actually got taught things other than gender fluidity in school , have heard of this imposing figure.

The British gentleman who rode around the desert with his blue eyes and, today, would have had more fans on social media than Taylor Swift.

So who was he?

Learning to Drive - it pays to have a good teacher

I was 15 years old and I wanted to learn to drive. My brothers scarpered. My parents were extraordinarily busy and the queue of volunteers was surprisingly small; much like supporters at a Kamala Harris Rally, no one seemed that keen on the task.

One of my brother's friends was conscripted 

He was the kind of lad ( 18 years old ) who would have been ordered to dance with the wall flowers at the school dance and would obligingly dance a waltz or foxtrot with the plain girl or the fat girl or the girl with crooked teeth. 

I could never understand why no one wanted to teach me how to drive: I was pretty, blonde, slim, and had very nice teeth. I didn't smell awful and was, in all respects, fairly easy on the eye.

But for some reason the prospect of sitting in the passenger seat while I navigated my way around a gearbox, a clutch and three little pedals didn't seem to be as popular as I had hoped.

In today’s polarised political climate, rhetoric plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception and opinion. Recent remarks by Vice President Kamala Harris, who likened Donald Trump’s rhetoric to that of Adolf Hitler, exemplify how words can become weapons in the political arena.

I was shocked. And I am not alone. The first thing that entered my mind was " Here we go again.... it is history about to repeat itself." 

To understand the implications of modern political rhetoric, we can look back to historical events such as the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170. King Henry II's frustrated outburst...

The Mini: A Little Car that took the World by Storm

Few cars trigger as much nostalgia as the iconic Mini. Born in post-war Britain, the Mini was not just a car; it was a cultural phenomenon, a beloved vehicle that captured the hearts of millions around the world.
 
Me included. 

The story of the Mini began in the late 1950s, a time when fuel shortages and economic constraints pushed the British Motor Corporation (BMC) to find a solution for efficient, small cars. Sir Alec Issigonis, the brilliant engineer and designer, was tasked with the challenge of creating a car that was compact yet spacious, affordable yet advanced.

Issigonis and his team developed the Mini with a radical approach. The engine was placed transversely, which was revolutionary for the time, allowing for more interior space. The wheels were pushed to the far corners, further maximizing the car’s interior while maintaining its small footprint. When the Mini was launched in 1959, its design was groundbreaking ....it was unlike anything on the roads. This little car was only 10 feet long, yet it comfortably ( well, sort of) seated four adults and had room for luggage. It was compact, practical, and, most importantly, affordable.

The Charge of the Light Brigade stands as one of the most famous - and infamous - military actions in British history. Occurring during the Battle of Balaclava on  25th of October 1854, amid the Crimean War (1853–1856), the charge has become synonymous with both heroic courage and tragic military miscalculation.

The ill-fated assault, immortalised in Alfred Lord Tennyson’s iconic poem, was the result of a fatal misunderstanding, leading a brigade of British light cavalry into the jaws of a heavily fortified Russian artillery position.

The outcome was catastrophic, cementing the event as a cautionary tale of leadership gone awry, even in the face of unshakable bravery.

So much of the quandary is down to ideology and politics rather than reality and commonsense.

Oil fuels our vehicles, planes, and ships, providing the backbone of mobility, while coal powers industries and generates electricity, driving factories and cities alike. Let us be realistic. Oil and coal are essential for mobility and industry. That is the reality.

Before kerosene was discovered, lighting and heating relied heavily on sources like candles, wood, and whale oil. Whale oil was the dominant fuel for lamps, but it was expensive and the whaling industry was becoming unsustainable as whale populations were being rapidly depleted.

A Whale of a Tale

I have often pondered why mankind decided to go after the humble whale. After all, the whale was out there, in the ocean, minding his or her own business and wasn't really causing any problem. Unless you were a seal, krill or plankton. In which case, you probably had a civil rights claim or two. 
Yet this gentle giant ( as far as humans are concerned ) was not bothering anyone. All the whales wanted to do was what they have done since God first had a great idea " I think I'll make a whale. "  and the whales just cruised around, having babies, blowing bubbles and migrating to warmer places and having a jolly old time.  

So what did the poor whale do to us? Well, let me tell you a whale of a tale and how the Industrial Revolution saved it.
